What is the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD)?

The Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) is a directive of the EU which regulates the journey of tobacco and tobacco-related products from the manufacturing process to store delivery. The directive becomes mandatory starting on May 20th, 2019.

All companies involved in the supply chain of tobacco products must provide electronic proof of tracking for each item. Therefore, the European Commission directs all parties to use a track and trace solution to supervise each process.

 

How does it affect your business?

Every tobacco product has to be marked with a 2D barcode and an individual dotcode. This dotcode contains detailed information about the name of the manufacturer, production date, serial number and more, and can only be processed using a special dotcode-enabled handheld device which is running a dedicated software solution.
